Driving in Sweden

In Sweden, your headlights must always be switched on, even in the daytime. Speed limits are 110 km/h and 120 km/h on highways, 70 km/h on rural roads and 50 km/h in cities and towns. In most cities, there is no such thing as free-parking but there are plenty of paid parking options where you can pay with a credit or debit card. Don’t forget to pay or you will get a very expensive fine! If you’re driving into the wilderness, you need to be extra-careful of collisions with moose — a very common cause of accidents! During winter time, be sure to watch out for heavy snowfall and strong winds.

Discover Sweden

If you’re a foodie, a culture buff or an explorer extraordinaire, Sweden will not disappoint. Hiring a car with Europcar allows you to begin your journey in no time – Head straight into the classically beautiful cities, or take a ride out to the hinterlands, with its raging rivers, colossal forests and stunning beaches. If you prefer to be part of a more urban landscape, the Swedish cities are in a league of their own. At the top of the must-visit list you’ll find the elegant Stockholm, laid-back Malmö and the medieval Uppsala. Make sure you take the time to soak up the homely, yet cosmopolitan atmosphere found within the beautiful museums, parks and castles. If you are planning on travelling to Sweden in winter, make sure you take a trip to the magical Swedish Lapland. Known as the heartland of the Samis, Europe’s only indigenous people there are plenty of outdoor activities: kayaking, hiking, fishing or exploring natural reserves… And of course, there is always the magic of the Northern Lights to contemplate! If you want to experience one of the most breath-taking drives of your life, take a cruise along the Höga Kusten (the High Coast)! Steep granite cliffs, lakes, fjords, park — the awe-inspiring scenery will steal your heart. If you’re more of a sea lover, make a beeline to Visby on the Western coast of Gotland island or to Fårö island, two idyllic spots for both party lovers, families on holiday or respite seekers.

Stockholm

Stockholm is nicknamed ‘the Venice of the North’, and for good reason. There are so many stunning sights to take in around the capital and the surrounding areas. Stockholm is known for its elegant style, historic museums and galleries as well as its fantastic food scene. Why not explore Stockholm’s old town and visit Gamla Stan? With its fantastic waterfront views and Stockholm’s Royal palace. Once you’ve finished visiting the old town take a trip out to Historiska Museet and discover the Swedish historical collection with art from the Iron Age till present times. With its woodlands, its islands and its lakes, Stockholm’s countryside also offers you plenty of opportunities to hit the road and explore. Head to Sigtuna, Sweden’s first town founded during Viking times on the shore of Lake Mälaren or explore Birka, on Björkö island, a Unesco World Heritage site that attracts travellers from all corners of the world.
