Discover Queenstown by car

Queenstown is a paradise for anyone who loves adventure sports. And with a car rental you can head to all the hotspots and put your nerves to the test. Main Town Pier is the place to be if you want to try your hand at jet boating and don’t miss top bungy jumping locations including spots overlooking the striking Nevis River. With opportunities for 8.5-seconds of uninterrupted freefall, Queenstown doesn’t mess around when it comes to getting your heart racing. Kawarau Bridge, located 20-kilometres east of Queenstown, is also a great jump location, with freefalls towards the Kawarau Gorge.

If you fancy raising your heartbeat in a different way, take the hour’s drive north of Queenstown to Shotover River for a spot of white-water rafting. The launch site for Kawarau River, east of Queensland is also just 25-minutes away by car and offers the perfect excuse to pass through historic Arrowtown – an old goldmining location with a colourful past. Tandem skydives over Shotover Street are also possible or you could have a go at indoor skydiving at the Marine Parade in central Queenstown.

Queenstown is ideal for thrill-seekers, but if you’d rather find other ways to pass the time, there’s plenty of calmer activities to enjoy. Tiki Trail to the west of the city goes all the way to the Skyline Gondola and offers spectacular views across the region. There’s also the Ben Lomond mountain range to explore with the summit being some 4-kilometres north-west of Queenstown centre. If you’re into the viticulture of New Zealand, don’t also miss the spectacular wine tours that run through the region. Visit central Queenstown wineries on a guided tour and sample local delights.

If you wish to venture further afield, you can do so with ease in a car rental. Queenstown to Christchurch takes around 6-hours by car, giving you the chance to explore close to 500-kilometres of New Zealand landscape. Invercargill to the north is a closer at just over 180-kilometres away and then there’s Dunedin, some 315-kilometres south-east.

Driving in Queenstown

When in New Zealand, always drive on the left-hand side of the road and overtake on the right. This is really important if you’re coming from a country where the opposite is true.

Roads, particularly around Lake Wakatipu, tend to have many tight corners and turns, so be sure to watch your speed and always drive with care. This is true should you also head up any of the nearby mountain ranges. Speed limit reductions have recently been applied. Most urban areas have a limit of 50km/h. This climbs to 50km/h in certain regions, so always read the local signage.

Peak hours are between 7-9am and 5-7pm. Avoid travelling around the city centre at this time if possible as congestion is possible. Parking in the centre of Queenstown is plentiful but usually works out between $1 and $4 New Zealand dollars per hour.
