Driving in Italy

You don’t have to possess an international driver’s license to rent a car in Italy - a US license is accepted.

The national speed limit is 130 km/h on autostrade (freeways), 100 km/h on main roads, and 90 km/h on secondary roads. In urban areas, the speed limit is set between 50-70 km/h, indicated by signposting. Speed must be reduced according to visibility at night, in school zones, and narrow or steep roads. In bad weather, the speed limit changes to 90 km/h on roads outside urban areas, and 110 km/h on autostrade.

Parking in Italy is a bit different. In urban areas, parking is permitted on the right-hand side of the road with two-way traffic. In a one-way street, parking is allowed on both sides of the street, but only if there is at least 3 meters’ space left in the road.

In big towns, paid parking zones are enforced and indicated by blue road signs. Paid hours can vary and some times of day are free, including all day on Sundays. Zones with limited parking times are indicated by blue stripes. In the capital city, Rome, parking is prohibited in the historic center from Monday-Friday, between 7am-8pm. Read less
