Travelling Inter-Island? Important Information
New Zealand - Two Island Hires
New Zealand consists of two main islands - the North and the South.
The islands are seperated by 30 km of water, The Cook Strait.
Regular ferry services run between the islands from Wellington (North Island) and Picton (South Island).
Ferry crossings take about three hours and if you plan to tour around both islands this saves you the expense of taking the car on the ferry with you. Drop the car at one ferry terminal and we will provide another car at the other ferry terminal when you arrive.
Ferry timetables do vary throughout the year and are subject to change and booking availability.
Europcar has offices at the Interislander ferry terminals in Wellington and Picton.
Please be aware that our vehicles are not permitted to travel on the ferry between the North and South islands in New Zealand. Once you create this booking, a staff member will split your rental into two separate bookings, one for each island - this will not affect the price you have been quoted. When you cross over, you will drop the vehicle at the ferry terminal and another vehicle will be waiting once you have crossed over. If you have any questions about this process, please contact our reservations centre on 0800 800 115 (NZ) or 1300 131 390 (AU).
To make the process easy & simple, you should book ahead on the ferries to make sure that during peak times you can still make your journey without delays. Bookings are heavy so please book ahead. You can check the latest timetable for the Interislander by phone: 0800 802 802 or web: www.interislandline.co.nz or contact Bluebridge on phone: 0800 844 844 or web: www.straitshipping.co.nz
As soon as you have made your booking with us, we recommend that at least 72 hours before your rental commences that you contact Europcar, so we can have the right car at ther right time for you at the ferry terminal when you arrive.
