Young driver

Drivers under 25, will need to pay a small fee when hiring a vehicle.

To help you stay safe on the road, there are a few things to keep in mind, and if you are new to driving, every new journey will feel like a new adventure.

Advice for young drivers

If you rent a car, ensure that you give yourself enough time to get to know the workings of the car – steering wheel, mirrors, seat position. These things will impact on how well you drive and how comfortable your journey is.

Some other notes to remember

Do not use a mobile phone or operate the GPS while driving unless the device is completely hands-free.

Be aware of travel times – if your journey has some hilly, tight, and winding roads, distances can be deceptive.
Plan your journey, and do not rush. Do not drive when tired. Take breaks and enjoy the journey.

Cyclists have the same rights as drivers - share the road with them. Slow down and pass safely and carefully.
Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The open road speed limit in Australia and New Zealand is a maximum of 100 km per hour. The road speed limit in urban areas is generally a maximum of 50 km per hour. At times you may need to drive slower due to weather, traffic conditions or winding roads.

All passengers must wear seatbelts at all times, including children. Children under the age of seven must be secured in an approved child restraint.
